Summer Activities
In the Summer there are hiking trails to follow all around the region – divided into 5 different levels of ability and experience – from easy family trails to difficult Nordic Walking Routes with 3 certified Nordic Walking Centres close by. Some of these trails start with a ride up the mountains on one of the ski lifts which run in the summer, or if you are lucky you can enjoy the relative comfort of a ski gondola. There are many cycle paths to experience – including the 350 km R2 Mur Cycle Path (Radweg), that follows the course of the river from its source in the Lungau valley to the village of Bad Radkersburg in the south of Styria. In addition there are a variety of mountain bike trails, with the challenging Alpentour route which runs near to Stadl, being the longest.
For golf fanatics, there are over 20 golf courses in the area to choose from - Styria has 9 golf courses including the 18 hole Murau-Kreischberg course which is about 10 minutes away by car, and the newly opened 9 hole course at Mariahof (extending to 18 holes in 2008) and the extensive Steiermaerkischer Golf Club Murhof. Carinthia has 9 courses, including the demanding Bad Kleinkircheim-Reichenau course and there are 3 more courses in Salzburgerland which are reasonably close as well.
Other local activities include - white water rafting on the river Mur between Tamsweg and Stadl (Herr Lassacher the owner of the Gasthof Murtalerhof organises this activity – including rafting for families); - summer tobogganing at Turracher Hoehe and at St Lambrecht; - fishing at various locations on the river Mur and at numerous ponds and lakes in the region, covering fly, lure and coarse fishing methods for a large variety of fish – from char to sturgeon. Horse riding fans are also well catered for, with trail riding, trekking, carriage rides, dressage and lunge and tuition also available. Details of many more attractions, such as the Styrian Wood Route, the Crystal Museum at Turracher Hoehe, the Brewery Museum in Murau, steam train rides on the Murtalbahn which runs from Murau to Tamsweg and back again and is open from the end of June to the beginning of September, the Grebenzen and Nockberge National Parks, and numerous ‘trails’ and museums, can be found in the recommended websites below – the www.murtal.at site in particular has a number of brochures that can be downloaded using adobe acrobat reader (we have provided some of these in the Chalet for you to read and make use of).
You'll find details of some of the particular places of interest to drive to and visit in Styria, Carinthia and Salzburgerland.
A word of warning though - check a map first, because although they are well worth visiting, some of the attractions are at least a 2 hour drive from Stadl.
